There are thousands of associations in Morocco, and they are not all alike. Before giving, it's natural to want to be sure your money will be well used. Here are seven simple criteria for choosing a charity in Morocco with confidence.
1. The association legally exists
In Morocco, associations are governed by the dahir of 15 November 1958 on the right of association. A declared association has filed its statutes with the authorities and received a receipt (récépissé). Don't hesitate to ask whether the association is properly declared.
2. Its work is concrete and verifiable
Be wary of vague causes. A serious association describes exactly what it does: how many meals, for whom, where, how often. The more concrete the work, the easier it is to check its impact.
3. It works on the ground
An association rooted in a neighbourhood or region knows the families and their real needs. It can act quickly, without unnecessary middlemen.
4. It explains what your gift pays for
A good association can tell you what your donation represents: a meal, a blanket, a consultation. It lets you choose a specific cause.
5. It provides a receipt
Asking for a receipt is a healthy habit. An organised association should be able to give you one.
6. It can be reached
A phone number, an email address, identifiable people in charge: you should be able to ask questions and get answers.
7. It has a track record
An association that has been active for several years has proven itself. Regular updates, field photos and testimonies are good signs.
Warning signs
- Pressure to give "right now", with no explanation.
- Requests for cash from strangers, especially on social media.
- No information on how the money is used.
- No contact you can reach.
Did you know? If tax deductibility matters to you, especially for a company, check the association's status and ask a tax adviser: the rules depend on that status.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I check that a Moroccan association is trustworthy?
Check that it is declared, that its work is concrete, that it explains how donations are used, that it provides receipts and that it can be reached.
Should I prefer a large or a small association?
Size matters less than transparency and presence on the ground. A local association often knows the real needs better.
Is it risky to give through social media?
It can be when the fundraiser is run by strangers with no identifiable organisation. Give preferably to a declared association with a contact you can reach.
Is my donation tax-deductible in Morocco?
It depends on the association's status and your own situation. Ask the association and a tax adviser.
